Tiger Woods: As a socially responsible as he wants to be
Unlike many other sports superstars Tiger Woods has never been a man to surround the dispute. He is not out late with the paparazzi following him. He shed tears on national television over other players. He is not giving their opinions about Tom Cruise or Britney Spears to the tabloids and he is certainly not giving opinions on race relations in professional golf or otherwise.
Woods has never been particularly vocal about their opinions on anything other than the game of golf. In fact, as he is about to make history at the Buick Invitational, Woods remains an enigma to many who regard it as a cultural icon that could make a greater impact on social issues.
In recent weeks, Woods has been subjected to rigorous scrutiny by both the media and other celebrities in the light of some Lynch culturally insensitive, "" the comments by Golf Channel anchor Kelly Tilghman and also by the recent controversy "noose" cover of Golfweek magazine.
Woods seemed almost untouched by any of the incidents and called Tilghman's remark a "no problem". To the dismay of those who expected a racial powder keg to explode Woods remained calm, composed and cool through both ordeals, pausing only to reflect publicly when repeatedly prodded by pressure free media and sportswriters around the country.
Jim Brown, ex-African professional football star said he thinks Bretton be maintained not only for himself but for Black athletes in general, but Woods is not moving. Tilghman accepted an apology and said the two are old friends and that he knows that she meant nothing negative in their comments.
Many like Brown have suggested that Woods could have done more to be socially responsible. Woods is well aware of those who have a champion of racial injustice. He has said before that he will not go that way and feel the call controversy over his stance about race in modern golf is driven by the media.
People forget that Woods is only part and African-Americans who, while fully never met a person has been candid about any issues other than those that directly affect your swing. They forget that just because he is a superstar, never signed to be a political spokesman for anyone. He has been and will always be a classy gentleman who tends to let the accident media and burn on their own disputes.
In this case, Woods handled the situation both professionally and aplomb. It is a truism that what Kelly Tilghman said was deplorable and that coverage Golf Week was unpleasant. Anyone can see that. There was no need to be melodramatic about this because in the end, everything worked itself, unless the protests, boycotts or visits from the Rev. Al Sharpton. Woods handled the incident as a man, even in silence. Above all handled it with class.
Woods knows well that racial incidents, only derive their power from fear, ignorance and the eternal media attention. Woods does not have to speak out against the absurdity of the media using words like "lynching" or put ropes on the covers of glossy magazines - are quite absurd on their own.
Woods is like any other sport superstar being paid huge sums of money from sponsors to maintain a certain image. The people in this world in general are not consistent with social issues. Woods were not African-Americans would not have so much pressure to make a stand? Certainly, Jack Nicklaus never asked to speak out against racial injustice in the world of golf, Tiger, why?
Woods is no stranger to the influence or power, especially in the world of professional golf. Certainly you have pressed the subject, Kelly Tilghman be fired. Regardless of what people outside the golf world think of it being as socially responsible as he has to be. He has referred frequently to his foundation and work with children to be socially responsible and very important to him. The Tiger Woods Learning Center in Anaheim, has reached a just over 16,000 children in just two years and Tiger, which is what matters most.
