Has anyone given their cat the two week dose in one injection of ampicillin also called Polyflex?
My cat, who also has diabetes, had an abcessed tooth and after the vet removed the tooth my cat's mouth continued to swell. I returned to the vet and she gave my cat one injection of ampicillin that lasts for two weeks! I am really nervous about it, but it appeared there was no other choice. The vet said trying to give the cat pills would only further injure the stitches and create more swelling. What has me so scared is the vet has only had this for three days and only used it once on a dog, three days ago. She said it was used for several years in Europe and now had our own FDA approval but was still relatively unknown here. Two weeks in one injection is what is freaking me out. And no one else knowing anything about it or its side effects, etc. Have you used this medication on any of your animals? If so, what was the outcome? I have to leave for New York on business Sunday, so that just compounds the problem. I can't take my cat and I have to go or lose my job!
My cat just received this shot, and so far, no side effects. He seems to be responding to it quite well, thankfully! I would definitely use this again.
This shot is much better than trying to force a pill down his throat right after he had dental surgery - that is just cruel!
