how do you mount a sheep skin scroll for framing?
this scroll is 500 years old it is written on sheep skin and has been rolled up for some time now. how should i flatten and mount it to matboard for framing?
When I need to flatten parchment, I roll it the opposite way and leave it for 1/2 hour. Then, it comes out nearly flat. If it's really delicate, roll it large (8 in diameter instead of 2 in.) and leave it for longer. Sheepskin comes in 2 layers. Some write on only the top layer making for extremely thin parchment. This should straighten easily. In two layers, it can be very thick and you may have to leave it for longer.
Mount it without glass touching. If you're talking about something that has gall ink, letters, lines, etc. will pop off when they stick to the glass. If you're brave, use a matte fixative. It works well (unless the parchment is dirty, and you'll just fix the dirt in.)
