Range Balls
Prior to playing a round of golf I hit 20-30 range balls, about half of which are with my driver--Help....?
When I leave the range I feel confident, yet will miss-hit up to 4 drives over playing 18 holes, top it, hit it to the right or hit it left. I need a 'key' to get me started. Taking lessons I am told I have a good stance and swing. I have tried my 3 wood, yet still have a few miss-hit. I realize most of this is in my head. Please share your pre-swing key or keys. Thank you.
PS...I am a 16 handicapper who plays 2-3 rounds a week and visits the driving range 5-6 times a week. Yes, I am retired.
As a 16, you must be able to hit the ball well, so I'd say that all of this is in your head.
During your practice on the range, are you hitting your balls one after another? Try replicating your entire routine. Take a range ball and tee it up. Take your stance, take a practice swing if that 's what you usually do and....you get the picture.
How long do you stand over the ball before starting your backswing? Golf is a difficult sport because there are so many things that can go wrong with our swing, but if we think too much about them, our mind gets in the way of our body. Paralysis by analysis, as they say. Try not to get frozen over the ball. If possible, try to shorten your pre-shot routine--give yourself less time to let those negative thoughts creep in.
Lastly, remember what all the pros say about hitting driver: when you want to hit it furthur, swing smoother, not harder. I'm a 16 as well, and I could NEVER hit driver until the past year and a half. I find that whenever I make a smoother swing, I tend to hit the ball further, and straighter. Good luck.
