Try On A New Lens Today: I Like the Purple One
Did you know that seemingly insignificant events in our lives hold the power to unleash deep inner transformation and reconnect us with the true joy of being alive? All it takes is trying on some new lenses for a change. Becoming present in everything I do is my purple lens and I like wearing this a lot.
The other day I had a long teaching day and retuned to my home away from home here in Niamey, Niger only to smile and get a new perspective of life once again, as I had lost count by now. Nadege, my house cleaning lady who comes in once a week, had rearranged the shoes on the porch in a new pattern. Her creative gesture was the catalyst. I instantly noticed and reveled in this changing model of her cleaning routines as my feet released their flip flops unto the slippery tiled floor and my hand pulled the front door handle. This was my sacred reentry through that portal of new awareness. I was home indeed.
Next, I observed how my smile was only getting bigger as my nose smelled the fragrant food being prepared in the kitchen. I walked to the hot steamy lab of Nigerien food creations and found Nadege all the way up to her elbows in white flour. She was making samosas, these half moon shaped things filled with tuna, grated carrots and onion. I greeted her with excitement and found even more joy reflecting back at me from her sparkling dark eyes. Nadege felt shy when I usually praised her, but this time she was a little more accepting. I felt like a sponge soaking up the feeling of aliveness within me while practicing total mindfulness and union with each breath. As I took my first bite out of one samosa, I experienced the simple yet blissful existence of me, this woman eating something different for the first time in her life. You see, the total alignment with that present moment did not allow for past memories of similar tastings. How could it? I was fully satisfied with being born into the pure source of joy, into life itself expressing its loving acceptance through my smiling face, my hands holding the food, and my blissful awareness.
But then, one wandering thought brought me back to the musical sounds of the frying pan. Have I been grateful enough for these little things taking place all around me since living in West Africa for almost two years now? Has my habit of mindfulness gained strength? Only the presence of joy can tell. What a better privilege is there for me than taking in the joy of each pure moment as life creates it out of nothingness and matures it into living wisdom!
As you quiet down your mental dialogue, look for your answers in each moment, in each breath. They could be hidden all around you simply awaiting your inner awareness to embrace them. I understand now that my purple lens, becoming present in everything, is a great treasure. Once dug out from deep inside me, and once sharpened with intention, this treasure has become my shining armor.
