What are some fun and interesting things to do and see in the Outer Banks of North Carolina?

I was in the time of the Outer Banks many but I wonder if I'm losing. I was in the headlights, etc. has been 4 years since I've been there ... something new? Unlike some of the typical tourist sites would be nice. I'll be there September 16-23. No hurricanes please! Hehehe
