The 10 exciting moments of the 09 golf season

Of course it was a year of great progress, climbs, big surprises and great disappointments. Outside field, a year when the Tour - and the time the world of golf - the support of their own - Amy Mickelson battle with breast cancer, horrible accident, Ken Green and Chris Smith tragic loss of his wife.

In a year of compelling moments, we offer a look at our top 10:

1. Tiger Woods wins his 71st in the Championship BMW. A course-record 62 in the third round. An eight-shot win. His sixth of the year if not counted. list one step closer to Jack Nicklaus link in second place on the all to win 73 times. Almost went with 70th win in its proper place, it would be hard to beat his 8-iron to 8 inches in 16 to beat Padraig Harrington in the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational. But it was that kind of year. He recovered from major knee reconstruction last June to dominate again BMW Championship and reminds us just how good this man really is. No, we have not forgotten the three seconds or major disappointments. We are waiting for No. 72 - And a chance at another Slam - in 2010.

2. THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola. Phil Mickelson won the battle on the course. Tiger left with the FedExCup. Do you get much better than this? In a season of big surprises, the play of the top two players shared the spotlight as Mickelson came from behind to clip Tiger three in the wire. Is shared again on the 18th hole, each with trophy in hand. A marketing dream. Could also be a preview of 2010? After years of trying to force a rivalry, perhaps it's time to sit and let it happen.

3. Pink output. Phil and Amy Mickelson called it a day of humility. We went with inspiration. If the sea of pink during the third round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial did not touch your heart, you must have. Players, caddies, wives, volunteers from spectators and media were decorated in pink - a little head to toe - to support Amy and her mother-in-law of Mary fight against breast cancer. The day - complete with David Feherty CBS Sports pink stripes in his goatee, a set of pink all of Ian Poulter and a reminder that Real men carry pink - brought tears to the Mickelsons and awareness for the disease. He recalled that many women - myself included - to stop procrastinating and get your mammogram. That goes far beyond support. That is to make an impact.

4. big surprises. No way around it. This was the year of the great surprise in every major. Just when thought we knew what was going to happen, four players stood up and said, hey, my turn. Angel Cabrera days began when he turned Kenny Perry Masters, beating Chad Campbell and Perry in a playoff. Then he went to Bethpage soaked where Lucas Glover stepped up big. Turnberry was a significant shift in the end, when ongoing solid Open Stewart Cink grabbed sixth away from the 59-year-old Tom Watson and YE Yang put an exclamation mark in the majors - and a dagger in Tiger's heart - in the PGA Championship.

5. Tom Watson. We remember the pain on his face. The shot that flew the green, the putt that he felt no fall. The playoff was not around. But honestly, what we take from Turnberry was an absolutely wonderful time high that lasted all week. Watson was not just below 60 during the week, was thirty-odd. He played the course he loves as he did 32 years ago, when Jack Nicklaus faced there in what was known as the Mourning " in the sun. "That came short? Was hard to see, but when we look back, remember how well he played the first 71 holes. And that makes us smile.

6. Big disappointment. Watson was not alone. Perry was about to win the grand he got in 1996 when he beat Mark Brooks in a playoff at the PGA. The PGA are supposed to belong to Tiger in a head to head final round against Yang. And the U.S. Open? Does not that belong to Mickelson, who had been there three times this is done earlier? Or David Duval, who had resurrected his career? Or even very promising Ricky Barnes? They did not finish it. Glover did. And the best line? It was Mickelson. The USGA had only a silver medal in the presentation of the second position, but tied for three seconds. They looked and Mickelson shook his head, "I have four children, me good pile "

7. Ryo and Rory. Ryo Ishikawa - Shy Prince of Japan - and Rory McIlroy, who kills Shirley Temple curls channels or Harpo Marx caught our attention this year and made us wonder about the future. Ishikawa States took by assault on the Northern Trust Open when he debuted his powerful swing - and an entourage of media to compete with Woods. The 18-year-old won four times in Japan, but his best result in the U.S. was a tie for 56th in the PGA. He missed the cut at the Masters and British Open, but captured us in the Presidents Cup, going 3-2-0. McIlroy, now 20, won once on the European Tour, was a top-25 fixture there and had two top-10 in the majors - a tie for third place in the PGA and a tie for tenth in the U.S. Open.

8. Golf Games Olympics. The field of competition where the world will play in 2016 has not been built yet. Heck, it has not even reached the drawing board. But do not worry. A plenty of time to build a hammer and a little more detail. The end result? Golf threw a big argument and put some of the largest faces in the game against Olympic Committee to help the pitch and pulled it out. Golf is the place it deserves on the world stage.
