Why is Red Hat so popular for a Linux distro?
I know there are lots of other versions of Linux but it seems when I go to a book store that they are all on learning Red Hat... none of the others.. Is there really a difference between Red Hat and all the other Distro's?
Five years ago all my Linux machines were using RedHat.
These days I am down to only one out seven. This is
because RedHat changed direction since then. Five
years ago (and before) RedHat was in the business of
supporting desk-tops and work-stations. They no longer
are. Strictly speaking you can put RedHat on your
desktop or workstation, but it is too expensive and
it is not as good as many other versions when the usability
is the issue. For a file-server however, I highly
recommend RedHat. It is dull, clumsy, inflexible,
but very stable and secure. For your desk-top, start
checking out Suse first. Then check out a few more
such as Mandrake Linux. Also keep in mind that all Linux
is the same, what differs from vendor to vendor is the
application software, desktop environment, and support
and service.
