Why use golf to develop leadership?

Copyright (c) 2008 GainMore Advantage

There is a striking similarity between playing the game golf and leadership. Once the analogies are clear to you, you may wonder why I did not see before. By the time you finish reading this, you know the most important connections and feel compelled to learn more.

35% of golfers registered in the UK are senior managers, professionals or executives, according to Mintel. This rises to 43.3% of golfers in London. And 12.8% of all golfers in the UK are senior managers, executives or professionals - Which is about 1.8 million golfers are senior managers, executives and professionals in the UK alone! (Source: GB TGI, BMRB Quarter 2006/Mintel 4) 44% of executives of senior managers and professionals in the UK have played, or would like to play golf. (Source: BMRB / Mintel) Add another 1.4 million managers (Source: TGI GB BMRB Quarter 4 2006/Mintel) and you realize how big a golf course has become the sport - and especially ABC1 id play the game, and still predominantly male - 83%!

In part, business leaders, particularly those with some marketing or sales of paper, play golf to network with prospects and customers. No doubt social status of being a golf club membership, and of course, in part, is the coincidence "of playing golf and being a business leader.

The characteristics of those who play golf and those who are like shows business leaders. For example, the desire for a good score (even win) a game of golf. To be concerned about their own personal performance and strive to improve their relationship with a strong personal "achievement orientation. I want to do well, because I want to do good!

There are differences too, and the most important. In golf, the golfer is playing against the course. It is one of the very few sports game where the other has no effect on the performance of golfers at all ... unless he (and is still mostly "he") permits. This is not the case for most business leaders where personal performance affected by the performance of others. So is the golf course where a player can certainly take the attitude, my performance that matters and only their actions change the outcome. This suggests that the desire to control - or directivity.

76% of golfers play for social reasons (GMI / Mintel) - This shows a desire, if not the capacity, powers of influence and communication.

Why use golf to develop leadership?

The game of golf attracts business leaders more than other groups - and perhaps above findings suggest why. So it became increasingly clear to our team that golf can be both an attractive idea for development in this group, and the game of golf itself The same could be deliberately used to develop the skills and behaviors associated with great leadership. In fact, many of our customers confirm the attraction golf training programs for our senior management requesting the training take place in golf clubs.

Our research on the use of simulations has shown that, given a really safe environment to practice the tools and techniques of leadership and management, not just the participants to learn more (learning 23% more) that use more traditional methods such as case studies, enjoy it more (17%) and demonstrate a greater transfer of new behaviors to work (transfer of a 26% higher).

Not only this, but studies in societies where women are considered disadvantaged in the management showed a greater improvement in management and leadership skills shown after a simulation of a traditional program on its 16% male counterparts greater improvement in demonstrated competencies. The key to the success of using simulations is that they provide a realistic and safe environment to practice the tools, techniques and behavior of great leadership (Kenworthy 2005)

It is a safe course, realistic?

The great thing about golf is that it is a the few activities that provide a level playing field really - through well-established handicap system. Maybe not perfect, but very close. This means that a golfer competes fairly scratch with a beginner. There are also rules that must play the game - which represent the constraints of doing business. Establishing rules that encourage pair or two pair to work together, and there are rules to encourage individual competition, sometimes in business we want our leaders to be an entrepreneur and "careerists" - Lead by example, at other times, we want to be team leaders or team players.

Caddies, provided a perfect metaphor for coaches and mentors. The course itself offers a varied environment, changing according to things beyond the control of the player, but observable by them. The hole provides an objective, The course provides a strategic plan to achieve the real goal. Points earned can be related directly to revenue or profit. The clubs and balls are the resources - Even the golf pro can be a resource consultant.

The golf game will provide a fantastic platform to learn leadership - its safe and fair, is as realistic as it needs to be and is fun!

Can you play golf to develop leadership?

Certainly there is something about the game of golf shares characteristics of good leadership, but if it is golf that develops the person as a leader or leadership that makes a golfer is an unanswered question. Like any training program powerful, leadership development requires a model of support and development firm. Unfortunately, not much good to tell someone to be Jack Welch, or even tell someone what Jack Welch does - that does not make you a leader. Also, you can simply try to develop the 10 principles, the habits of 7, 12, etc. great things from the best leaders in the world - leadership is personal - the first step in becoming a leader is to take care of themselves and align their personal values achieve what we want to achieve. If it were that simple then there would be a leadership issue anywhere in the world today.

Solid foundations

development effective leadership (in fact, for adults to learn anything effectively) the student needs to go through three processes of learning according to Bloom-cognitive, affective and psychomotor learning. We need to develop knowledge about leadership, coupled with a feeling or emotion with the desire to learn the knowledge and physically put that knowledge into practice.

Most business leaders have some knowledge of what constitutes "good" leadership - whether the practice how many all the time. You may have seen "good" leadership exemplified by others in their past or present. They may have read a book on leadership - as 7 Habits. When these fail more often to become new behaviors is twofold - first, most examples of "good" leadership many sometimes carried out "naturally" by the person demonstrating them, often referred to as "born leaders. are" good "leaders, but not consciously know what they do - and therefore are unable to share with others what they should or can do. Most books, however, tend to focus on one of two ways - as being a leader - here is Mr. Big CEO and this is what you did, you should do the same. or distill best "behaviors and provide a checklist for you to make "good" leadership.

In the first case, the "natural leader" can not (or not) to give you the skills to learn. In the latter (books), which often do not make an emotional connection to apply the knowledge (not that you bought the book so you must be willing to learn), or provide a simplistic relationship application that, then this then you are at work. If the new habit "Does not work for the first time, the book offers little or no guidance as to what to do now.

What people need is a synthesis of tools, skills, attitudes and attributes of "good" leadership within a structured model supported by templates that let you learn the physical behavior. And way to ensure learning is an emotional hook through the game of golf as a metaphor, and provides a means of golf for you to put into practice their physical behavior for yourself first - that is, self-leadership, then you can use the templates on the job. All practice within a secure environment that is fun and realistic.

Building on this basis, the safe, realistic learning of a business simulation in the golf course and has the leadership development that really does what says on the box.
