How to buy pearls - AAA to Z
Whether its romantic aura, its subtle beauty and simplistic style that has decided it's time to add a beautiful pearl jewelry piece to your collection. Before running out to your favorite jeweler and picking the first thing you see, learn about the investment you are about to do. Like any other precious stone, not a good number of things you should know about pearls can help you not only get the best deal, but the appropriate pearl for you.
First, let me start by saying that there is no official classification system at the pearl industry. However, there are 2 systems different reputable dealers who have pearls themselves. The first system is AAA-A system that allows jewelers to grade pearls. In this system, a rating of AAA, the pearl is of the highest quality. The pearl should be nearly flawless and have a high gloss. If the pearl has a rating of AA, which still must have a high gloss, but may have a flaw here or there. The grade of A is the lowest quality pearl. This type of pearl is likely to have a lot of defects and lack of shine.
The second system widely accepted by traders in pearls is the AD system, sometimes known as the system of Tahiti. This is the system commonly used to grade Tahitian or South Sea pearls in overseas markets. In this system, a grade of A means the pearl is the most high quality with high brightness and is nearly flawless. The classification is established thereafter, with a pearl B with a high gloss medium and some shortcomings. A pearl with a grade of C is most likely to have a medium brightness, defects, possibly more than 50% of the surface. Any pearl given a grade below D will not considered useful for jewelry.
Because of these two classification systems are not the whole industry, it is important that you feel like you can trust your jeweler. Ask them for grading pearls in writing, any reputable dealer should provide this. Thus, you have the quality of the pearls in the words rather than just the level they considered appropriate. The other thing to look for when grading a pearl is the pearl, or the thickness of the surface. The thicker the nacre, the more durable the pearl will be over time. A good thick nacre begins at about 0.5 mm so keep this in mind and use it as a guide in the choice of pearls.
When buying pearls, it is important to carefully examine the surface. A high quality pearl should look bright and shiny. You must be able to see your reflection in a pearl of great quality. Lower quality pearls have a chalky or milky appearance. Also, check the pearl's surface to ensure that is smooth and free of discoloration or other defects. The Perfect Pearl must be round, smooth and shiny.
The next thing to look for in a pearl is the color. This is an area where personal taste can and must overcome what is valuable. There are colors of the pearls are rarer than others in nature, but this should not be the determining factor. When the purchasing pearls, the color should be based on personal taste and what looks best on your skin tone. With that being said, pearls range in color from white to black with all colors in the means. Therefore, it should be easy to find a pearl of great quality in just the right color to your liking.
Another thing to consider when shopping for pearls is the size and how it affects the costs. Naturally, the larger the pearl, the more expensive, depending of course on the other factors. Pearls are measured in millimeters and depends on the type of pearl. Akoya pearls are often smaller and can range from 6 mm to 8 mm. Tahiti, South Sea and Freshwater pearls tend to be slightly larger than the Akoya pearls. The average size of pearls sold on the market today is about 7 mm. Pearls are also called "pearls" that are small, often less than 1 mm which can be found in jewelry stores worldwide.
So, before going to stores to do some research and be informed about the type of pearl you want to take home with you. As an informed consumer, you can to get more for your money. In the end, you will feel better about your purchase, you will most likely have made a better investment and will choose a piece of jewelry that falls over the coming years.
