VW Golf - A New Hope?
Once again England is preparing to face the old enemy Germany tonight in Berlin for a friendly game of football promises to be quite the opposite. I recalled that at the ripe old age of 41, I'm too young to remember the glorious World Cup victory took place in July 1966, which was 11 months before entering this world.
I worry a bit that unless Fabio Capello can work their magic soon I could not ever see a victory in the World Cup England in my life.
It made me start thinking about the historical moments that have been witnessed on television though. These include the Berlin Wall coming down, the release of Nelson Mandela, 9 / 11 and the historic election victory Barack Obama of course name a few. On one occasion I remember vividly was when me and my little classmate Colin spent a sunny day in May 1977 on the outer row Odeon Cinema in Bristol with what felt like most of the population the world, to see the movie Star Wars.
We waited all day and finally got to see the film as it was getting dark. Memory I thought we sat there eagerly waiting for the curtain to show clutching a bag of popcorn butterkist that life could not get any better.
I saw Star Wars on TV the other day and although it has all the amazing CGI effects of a sci-modern fiction, the plot of good triumph over evil is a timeless one.
I must admit that I thought made me a bit confused when the aftermath of Star Wars began to appear and we learn that the first film was actually the fourth episode in others. I think even the most ardent fans may have begun to wonder if subsequent installments will be made for artistic or delivery a pension plan for George Lucas.
Somehow this leads me to talk about all the latest Volkswagen Golf. I think because we were talking about the aftermath and Golf 2009 is the continuation of a story that started long ago (1974) in a factory far, far away (well Germany).
We are now into the evolution of the sixth of this alternative market to the likes of the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra, and like "A New Hope" the newcomer is has been something of a makeover for the digital age.
We start with a new ultra-efficient engine, six speed gearbox and optional touchscreen control in 2-liter TDI model. You will also find computer-controlled suspension and intelligent cruise control that scans the road ahead for slower traffic and maintains a safe distance accordingly.
In sharp contrast to the original course that only came equipped with a lighter, the latest model can might as well have come from another galaxy.
His style is not as surprising as a lot of new models and from a distance you would be hard pushed to distinguish old of the new Golf. At present there is a crease that runs along the foot of the car, and a new front grille, although these changes are radical.
It's a story one inside little different however. The Golf has a revised interior, which becomes more equipment, new look and more material luxury seats. Most striking is the picture New instruments, which has cut black aluminum with white, backlit letters, while the steering wheel gives you additional functionality with new buttons for controlling the system sound and onboard computer.
Volkswagen has worked hard to reduce motor fuel consumption and emissions. The 138bhp 2 liters TDI returns almost 58mpg while CO2 emissions of 159g/km are cut to 129g/km.
Fortunately, the performance is not sacrificed in the quest for efficiency. 2 liters TDI is powerful and never shortness of rhythm, particularly when playing. This is helped by Gearbox Direct Shift automatic (DSG) optional instead of the gearbox six-speed manual. It provides smooth, instantaneous shifting through the steering wheel mounted paddles, allowing fully automatic shifting.
The new Golf has a chassis similar to the previous model, but it feels more solid on the road due to the adaptation of the chassis control that automatically optimizes the damping suspension and isolates the occupants of the rough road surfaces.
You'll also find extra safety equipment aboard the new Golf, including airbags knee for the driver. There is also a new system of restraints to reduce whiplash injuries, and comes with a warranty plus the latest stability program mail.
Only time will tell if this episode of Golf will be present in the mythology of cars in the coming years.
